Get to know Frankfurt (Oder) and start communicating in German

This course is designed for new exchange students with no knowledge of German.

Hello Germany! In this six-day introduction we will take you on a journey – not only for the first steps of learning German to guide you through every day life, but we will also get to know the new University, explore Frankfurt (Oder) and the region that is full of beautiful nature and traditions, the nearby capital Berlin and other places worth seeing while in Germany.

In this course you will learn more about the culture, history and contemporary life in Germany. You will not just sit in class, but move around Frankfurt and take part in interactive activities and challenges to hear the German language, test your knowledge and start the semester with a better feeling for the language.

Regular students should consult the study and examination regulations of their degree program or the academic advisors of their degree program for information on the crediting of language courses and language certificates.

01.09. - 30.09.2025

80 lessons in one month

on five days per week

Achieving the basic level A1 in German for a good start to further language courses during the semester.

This course is designed for new exchange students with minimal or no previous knowledge of German.

You just arrived in Germany to study at Viadrina. You already have some experience with the German language and some knowledge about Germany and want to learn more? Here you can take your first steps before the semester starts, in a place where the language and the culture you learned about is part of everyday life.

The course focuses on the development of communicative competence in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing and is taught in German. The course book offers a balanced approach to developing your individual language skills.

Because cultural knowledge is one of the main foci of this course, you will also learn about practical life in Germany (especially Frankfurt (Oder), Brandenburg and Berlin) and German-speaking cultures.

Achieving the basic level A1 in German:

By the end of the course, you will be able to engage in simple conversations about familiar things. You will know greetings and everyday expressions, you will be able to count and tell time, and negate sentences in day-to-day contexts. Furthermore, you will be able to talk about yourself and your family and friends. You will be able to speak about events that happened in the immediate past and express plans for the future. In addition, you will have developed reading strategies that allow you to glean information from simple newspaper and magazine articles.

Exchange students can receive ECTS after successfully completing German A1 Course (after passing the written examination for German A1).
Exchange students should consult the study and examination regulations of their degree program or the academic advisors of their degree program for information on the crediting of language courses and language certificates.
